CNC milling and CNC turning are the two most common machining processes buyers consider for custom parts. The right process depends mainly on part geometry. Some parts are clearly milled, some are clearly turned, and some need both processes.

What CNC Milling Is Best For

CNC milling services are used for parts with flat surfaces, pockets, slots, drilled holes, tapped holes and complex features cut from blocks, plates or billets. Common milled parts include housings, brackets, fixture plates, covers, manifolds and precision mechanical components.

What CNC Turning Is Best For

CNC turning services are used for round or rotational parts. Common turned parts include shafts, sleeves, pins, bushings, spacers, threaded components and small lathe parts. Turning is usually efficient when most features are concentric around an axis.

When a Part Needs Both Processes

Some parts need turning for the outside diameter and milling for flats, cross holes, slots or side features. These may be produced with turning plus secondary milling, or with live tooling depending on geometry and quantity.

Where 5-Axis CNC Machining Fits

5-axis CNC machining is considered when the part has angled surfaces, multi-side features, complex geometry or tight alignment requirements across several faces. It can reduce setups for some complex parts, but it is not necessary for every component.

Process Selection Checklist

  • If the part is mostly round, start with CNC turning.
  • If the part is block-like with pockets or flat faces, start with CNC milling.
  • If the part has features on many sides, review 5-axis CNC machining.
  • If the part has both round and milled features, include all critical dimensions in the drawing.
  • If cost matters, ask for design feedback before finalizing tight tolerances.
