Material selection affects CNC machining cost, tolerance stability, surface finish, strength, corrosion resistance and delivery risk. Buyers often start with a familiar material, but the best choice depends on how the part works, where it will be used and what production stage the project is in.

Aluminum CNC Machining
Aluminum CNC machining is commonly selected for lightweight custom parts, prototypes, housings, plates and brackets. 6061 is widely used for general-purpose machined parts. 7075 is selected when higher strength is needed. 2024 may be considered for strength and fatigue-related applications.
Stainless Steel CNC Machining
Stainless steel CNC machining is useful when corrosion resistance, strength or appearance matters. 304 is common for general corrosion resistance. 316 is often selected for harsher environments. 17-4PH can be used when higher strength and heat treatment are relevant.
Titanium CNC Machining
Titanium CNC machining fits parts that need strength, low weight and corrosion resistance. Grade 2 titanium is commercially pure and corrosion-resistant. Ti-6Al-4V is used for stronger parts in demanding applications.
PEEK and Engineering Plastics
PEEK machining is used for high-performance plastic parts where heat resistance, chemical resistance or insulation matters. Delrin and nylon are common for wear parts, guides, spacers and prototypes. Plastic parts may need extra review for thin walls, flatness and moisture-related dimensional change.
Questions to Ask Before Choosing Material
- Does the part need strength, low weight, corrosion resistance or insulation?
- Will the part be a prototype, low-volume production part or repeat production item?
- Are there critical tolerances, threads, sealing surfaces or bearing fits?
- Does the surface need anodizing, passivation, polishing, plating or coating?
- Can an alternative grade reduce cost or lead time without affecting function?
If material choice is still open, include acceptable alternatives in the CNC machining RFQ. This helps the supplier compare cost, lead time and manufacturability.
